My apologies to my blog readers - this weekend guess interview series has been abandoned for quite a long time. But now it's back and I am sure you will meet amazing people here.

Today, let's greet Helen the Cake Artist!

*Could you please tell us a little bit about yourself

My name’s Helen and I run a cake company called Cat’s Whiskers Cake Design. I’m a work at home mum with two small sons, one of whom is pre-school age.

* How did Cat’s Whiskers Cake Design come about?

The business started off as a hobby. My mum did cake decorating classes in the ‘80s when my brother and I were small so we always had fabulous birthday cakes. When my brother got married eight years ago I helped my mum to make the wedding cake – and I was hooked! I took night school classes in cake decorating and sugarcraft while working as a Chartered Accountant, completing work for one of my final assessments at 38 weeks pregnant with my first son!

Initially the business was set up and run on a part-time and hobby basis while I worked but then in 2009 I was made redundant while on maternity leave with my second son. The now-or-never moment arrived and I took the plunge to run the business full-time, with the support of my lovely husband.

* What does it mean to you being a Cake Designer and run your own business?

Basically I love cake! I love baking (I come from a long line of bakers!) and I love creating new designs. I love trying new things and working with people to create something special for their celebration. Running my own business gives me a responsibility and satisfaction that I love too. I spend more time at home with my family too, which is a definite benefit to my children.

* What makes your business different/special from other cake vendors?

I work from home so you come and drink tea and eat cake in my dining room when you come for a consultation! I don’t work with a set number of designs that you pick from – in fact I love to make each cake different from any others I’ve made before. I’ll take your ideas and we’ll work together to come up with a unique design just for you. Everything you see on my cakes is handmade by me – from the icing designs to the sugar flowers to the wired cake jewellery – so I can adapt anything to co-ordinate with your scheme.

*Do you specialize in any one particular thing?

I don’t really specialize in any one area as the design I make are so varied. I do make handmade sugar flowers. These are made from icing but wired so that they can be made into sprays. All the flowers start off white and are hand coloured individually. They’ve been really popular with our more traditional-look brides, and they keep pretty much indefinitely so they make a great keepsake from the day.

* What part do you love most of a wedding?

There are a few bits I love – the first is when you meet with a new client and you know that they’re happy with what you’ve suggested. It’s great to know that you’re going to be part of their celebration. The second is when I send photographs of the finished cake to the bride. It’s terrifying waiting for the reaction back but overwhelming when they love it. And finally it’s got to be when the cake has been delivered and set up – the pressure’s off then and I know it’s all there in one piece.

* Any special advice/tip that you would like to share with our readers?

Talk to your cake designer – don’t be afraid to ask questions. This is what we do every day so we can tell you what’s possible and what’s not in icing. If you meet with a few people, go with your gut-reaction as to which one to choose. It’ll usually be right. You need to be comfortable that your cake designer has listened to your ideas and taken them on board. But also trust them to tell you honestly what you can and cannot achieve within your budget. Generally the more complicated the design the more expensive it’ll be so you might have to be prepared to compromise to achieve the look you want within your budget.

* Where would you like to be in 5 years?

Still working from home and with a family who’s happier because of that. And still making new cake designs!

Something different - Yes! This is cake - all edible! Just amazing!!!

Vintage Wedding Styled Photo Shoot - A Day to Remember!

Finally, THE shoot we did recently is featured on Rock 'n Roll Bride today! We are doing the happy dance. Thank you Kat for having us!!!!

I always call the day Mandy from Saddleworth Shindigs convoed me on Etsy my lucky day!!! And it was!!! And I always thank my lucky star to let her found me on Etsy. Back in March Mandy told me she was in the process of arranging a vintage style photoshoot with a mega talented photographer, which is hopefully going to take place in April/May and asked if I would like to join in on the party and bring some of my bouquets to the shoot. Of course I said yes...pretty please...it was my first time and I was so excited. Mandy told me she has a vintage china and props hire company in Saddleworth near Oldham and she send me the links of other members, too, so I can have a peek. I was totally impressed with what I saw. I love Mandy's stuff and she has such a good taste. Her styling is second to none and her photos are just as good. I think she can be a great photographer herself!

Then I saw Andrea's ( from Andrea Ellison Photography ) Blog. I was not only in love with her photos but her beautiful wordings often made my eyes watery. Finding Claire's Etsy shop

was a great experience for me. I was mermerized by her fine art photography and indeed am now saving for one of her print. But later on, looking at her blog, I was not less impressed at all with her portraits. And now she's officially a wedding photographer! Can't be any better!!!

I love cakes, but I must say after seeing and tasting Helen's cupcakes, I am now officially addicted. It tasted as great as it looked so we were fighting ourself miserably to decide - to eat, or to keep! Love her miniature cakes and overall adore her sugar flowers. They are so real. If I didn't tell you you'd say these roses are real! Helen has far more wonderful stuff on her Website but I will leave you the joy and excitement to find out yourself.

I met our make up artist Hannah and our model Amelia on the day of the shoot. Beautiful, gorgeous figures and sparkling characters! Charming! Just charming! Hannah runs her own make up business and I am sure, wedding or special occasion, you will feel totally relaxed with lovely Hannah and you will look great and be the centre of attention. Amelia was just as lovely and she modelled as a fish in the water. Just looking at her was so joyful. Amelia just opened her Blue Velvet Vintage Store in Frodsham packed with lovely things and her online store is coming soon. I wish her much success (not that she needs my wishes - she'll be very successful anyway :)

So we started to plan this photoshoot since March and in late April we still haven't sorted out the venue and the dresses. Just a few days before the day we decided to shoot, stepped out Simon from Willington Hall and Amy from Honey Pie Boutique . Isn't it just like in 'Cinderella' with a happy ending? We then had gorgeous dresses, exploding red petitcoats, sashes and a heaven on earth. Willington Hall was just a dream. Beautiful and romantique, full of vintage flair. Just an hour drive from busy Manchester it's another life. I had fresh air enough for a month long!!!

And there I met Jo from Jo Rutherford Photography . Broad, warm smile and helpful hands! Later I took a proper look at her page and I absolutely adored the way she played with the light in her photos. They're ALL stunning! Jo offered photograph lessons for beginners, too, and you better check out her fan page often to see if she offers a next time! I bet it'll be fab!!!.

We had a lovely day at Willington Hall, working hard, laughing hard, and feeling a lot! Sun, Rain and Wind took turns to visit us - funny we had everything in one day. For me it was a great experience to meet the people I admired in flesh and to work together. Yes, it WAS a happy day!!!

Just bought my first SLR camera yesterday and it's so exciting. I started on Kim's order which includes a bouquet of cotton fabric roses and ranuncula in deep pink deep purple and burgundy and here are the first flowers - I am so happy playing with my new camera :) Woohoo!

GINA & JOE Wedding

I posted this in my Facebook Fan Page a while ago but I'd like to share this with my blog readers, too. I simply love this wedding so much.

Gina came across my brooch bouquet GARDEN OF HAPPINESS #5 last year in August and she found it matched perfectly with a vintage button she'll use for her dress. She told me she have a spring wedding and her bridesmaids have dresses from Anthropologie and they are a mix of color combos: yellow, black, green, purple, pink and yellow. The only thing she'd like to change is the colour of the backing and handle wrap and I said yes I'll do it. So the light rainbow colour sheer ribbon was replaced with green polka dot ribbon and cream sheer ribbon with gold tiny dots. The bouquet travelled well over the pond and Gina was happy. She said in her feedback left for the transaction

" Lynn was wonderful to work with! She was very open to making slight adjustments and willing to give me various ribbon options. She was also prompt in providing me with photos in order to make the best decision. The bouquet is the perfect size, colorful, tons of fun, and will add so my charm to my vintage inspired wedding next spring. Thank you for making my day even that much more special ;)"

NEW DAZZLING BLUE BROOCH BOUQUET #2 and DAZZLING BLUE NECKLACE

I've completed this bouquet a few days ago (as posted on my FB :) ). I've been so patient to wait to take photograph of it. Well I guess I have no luck. The UK weather has been so terrible we have no sunlight.
Couldn't wait anymore, so I took some photos of it today inside the house.Poor quality photos but anyway here're some sneak peeks.

I made a necklace, too. A beautiful pair of vintage blue and blue AB rhinestone earrings, a set of huge blue rhinestone brooch and earrings singed Judy Lee, a silvertone chain necklace signed Sarah Coventry, a few vintage silvertone filigree plates, super quality blue satin ribbon and felt, and here we are!

KIERAN'S WEDDING

Earlier this year I was contacted by a bride, who wanted to send me some fabric with floral prints with which I would make her a few flowers and boutonnieres. I was pretty skeptical about the whole project because I didn't see it at once in my head. The flowers are for her bridesmaids and flower girls dresses which are made of the same fabric with ivory silk overlay, and the boutonnieres are to match the boys ties in blue floral print faric. And some other boutonnieres to match the bridesmaids, too.

After a few attemps, with Kieran's help I came up with a version which seemed to be acceptable. Kieran said 'OK ship it'. We didn't have much time, so I shipped all the flowers and just kept all my fingers and toes crossed that she'd like them in person.

Recently this super sweet lady got back to me saying 'The flowers were a hit, everyone loved them!" which was a huge relief to me. And she sent me her lovely wedding photos.

I know this post is image heavy, but I can't help posting all the pictures. How I love all of them. The wedding's so COOL! I am SO in love with this rustic wedding with a vintage twist! Love all the details - all went so well together. Everybody looked so happy. It seemed all were having fun and enjoying it so much. And of course Kieran was so beautiful in her pretty dress. She was blooming!

NEON FALL !

I am always fascinated by all those colours we can find in the nature, especially in Fall. Everything seems to change after just one night! And if the sun is there, all dull colours suddenly become so rich, so vibrant under the light! So much fun! Here is my new brooch bouquet, totally dedicated to Fall. I call it 'Neon Fall' -colourful vintage brooches and earrings in flower shapes, lots of sparkly rhinestones and gorgeous marabou and ostrich feathers...I took the photos myself with my faithful but poor, old sony cybershot, so I am sure these are not so fancy photos but hope you enjoy them somehow. ANTOINETTE'S MAGIC

A few months ago while wandering the net I came across this blog post http://periodmovies.blogspot.com/2007/03/marie-antoinettes-wedding-gown.html from The Period Movie Review blog. I was totally mesmerized by the pictures and the atmosphere they created. There came an idea about a Mari Antoinette inspired bridal brooch bouquet.

It took me quite a long time to find the ingredients for this bouquet. I searched low and high for vintage flower pins and earrings in cream and champagne but I didn't find anything beautiful or special enough. Then one day I came across a beautiful set of flower pin, earrings and bracelet in light gold with crackle cream enamel paint and I knew immediately this was what I was looking for. The crackle paint gave a super nice and dreamy antique look. In the end I used the earrings and the bracelet to embellish the bouquet handle.

I started to look out for vintage enamel flowers in light gold with cream crackle paint. Needless to say there were not a lot of them out there and it took me a long time to find enough of them to make a statement for the bouquet.

Then began the hunt for matching flowers and rhinestone jewel which would come in harmony with what I've already had. The main colours are gold, champagne, cream, beige and off white.

And after a long waiting time and painful labor, here it is:

I gave the bouquet a beautiful ribbon loop backing. The loops are made of gorgeous cream sheer wire edged ribbon with gold thread woven in. I wrapped the handle with light cream habutai silk and added a layer of light cream lace ribbon on top, then embellished it with vintage lace trim, the link bracelet and the earrings mentioned above. The handle itself just screams classy!

If you're planning a vintage wedding this is for you. Pair it with a cream/champagne or even nude pink flower hair piece and a birdcage veil, it'd be perfect! Keep checking back my blog, I'll post THAT hairpiece very soon... :)

FALL FIESTA # 2

Fall Fiesta #1 was such a hit and it has gone to a good home, so I thought I should make a Fall Fiesta #2. I always love Fall with its richness of colours. Well, here it is. I really love the way it turned out. Again, lots of vintage enamel and rhinestone flower brooches and earrings. Beautiful printed taffeta ribbon backing and raffia handle wrap. Hydrangeas

So,here is the result of my extra hour work last night - 5 clusters of hydrangeas in shades of blue and green - about 10 dozens of single bloom. The silk was specially treated then every single petal was hand cut, then sewn together, added a bead and finally was handwired together into clusters. It was so late when I finished and I was terribly tired and sleepy and my fingers hurt but I was so happy with them.

They are meant for this bouquet. I made this bouquet a while ago as a part of an order. My bride wanted white roses with some cymbidium orchids and clusters of hydrangeas. Her colours are white, light green and light blue. When this bouquet came out, I sent her a lot of photos of it and she was very happy. She's happy so I should be happy, right?! The bouquet was sitting there waiting for other parts of the order to be ready so they can go together. I liked it a lot, but something kept bothering me. At first I didn't think of any reason, but finally I found that the hydrangeas were not convincing.

So for my own sake :) I decided to do them again. And here they are. I hope Andrea will love it when she sees them. They will replace the old hydrangers in the bouquets and I will add some more crystals to the bouquet, too. I feel much better now. In fact I like them so much I am thinking of offering them in my Etsy shop as handtied hydrangea bouquets (with stems sticking out from the tied ribbon) in custom colours with customer's choice of ribbon colours, too. Is it a good idea? How about this? :-)

In love with Cameo

So, as you can tell, I have recently been rather obsessed with brooch bouquets. You may already got fed up with my blog posts. Here is however something different.
A while ago I was contacted by a bride who said she wanted a bouquet in white similar to my Calypso bouquet but without the seashells. And she said she loved Cameos. She wanted one in the bouquet and one on the handle. Her wedding dress would be in white and black with scallop edged lace, so we agreed on some black and lace accents in the bouquets.

And here is how her bouquet came out. White sinamay roses with pearl and swarovski crystal centers, hand curled white goose biots, handwired pearl and swarovski crystal picks, lace leaf aplique's, dainty black stripped beaded hackle feathers, and 2 beautiful cameos! The handle was embelished with beautiful scallop edged bridal lace and a white velvet bow with a black/white cameo brooch in the center.

I really liked hhow it turned out, so did my bride. How do you think?

EVER AFTER 3 - handtied brooch bouquet

The 'Ever After 2' was such a hit, and my bride totally loved it, so I kept looking around for Sarah Coventry 'Fashion Petal' Pins for another 'Ever After'. And finally it's here :) Not quite the same, but this is another brooch bouquet in this 'handtied' series.

Totally different from other brooch bouquets of mine with the only exception of the 'Fall Fiesta' (and other brooch bouquets available out there :) ), with this one I strived for a natural look. The daisy pins were too pretty - that was the reason. So I gave each pin a stem and tied them together in a flexible, lazy way but with super gorgeous 100% silk ribbon, with the ends of the stems sticking out.

More interestingly, I found beautiful matching tiny flower fillers for this bouquet to make it look more natural - glass lampwork flower buds, vintage rhinestone button and czech glass pressed flowers which were handwired together to resemble clusters of hydrangeas...

Here are some more pretty shots which Monkeygraphy did for my 'MORNING BREEZE' brooch bouquet. This is one of my favorites. Mostly white, with some green accents, super sparkly with rhinestones and the enamel finish of the flower pins, long, sleek satin ribbon streamers, this bouquet looks quite classic yet still has the innovative element because of the materials themself.

No doubt this is one of my all time favorites.

A new flower for your hair : Dahlia

I made this delicate flower from 100% crepe silk in blush pink and mounted it on a sinamay base together with some lace leaf appliques and two hand trimmed and hand curled ostrich plumes. This mini hat is attached to a clear comb and a super skinny headband (which you can possibly hide under your hair) for an easy and secure placement.

I've recently received these photos from Hannah who purchased my original 'Old Glam Brooch Bouquet'. How I love them all. I love how nicely everything tied in together. Love the dress, the suit, love how sweet and hapy they look.

Hannah said she was having a vintage style wedding which would be both their grandparents 50th anniversaries. She said she'd be changing into their gowns from 50 years ago for the luncheon and for her going away dress and she thought the bouquet would look fantastic with all the dresses. Wow! How special! I love the idea and one must feel very emotional and meaningful wearning those vintage wedding gowns from the grandmamas.

I love this shot, too. The baby is Hannah's nephew and they got that shot because all day he was pointing at her bouquet as he loved the sparkle in it. How cute!

I've just made this bouquet which is totally dedicated to Fall, my favorite season of the year. Took some pictures with my old, loyal, horrible Sony Cybershot hence the photos are not very civilised :). But if you want some sneak peeks here they are :

Hot fall colour vintage brooches and earrings, some with rhinestones, trimmed ostrich spines, handtired style bouquet with stems sticking out from raffia wrap, burlap cloth leaves backing and a copper stamping embellishment. How I love these upcycled bouquets which will last fresh forever. Immagine how nicely they could be displayed in your home after the wedding?

We had a fun photoshoot last weekend and I've just received these photos. Love them all!

This bouquet is totally 'Alice in Wonderland' inspired. It took me so much effort and time to collect enough vintage brooches and earrings for this bouquet. The difference is that all of them are roses. I made this bouquet in a tear drop style but I gave it a heart shape. I call it " Everlasting Love"

And to match I made a huge silk red rose sash/brooch for the bride and a small red silk rose bouquet for the bridesmaid.

I would love to tell more about these babies but I guess a picture's worth thousands words. Thank you so much Monkeygraphy team.

I wanted to post this quite a long time ago but I guess there'd always been something happening when I was about to do it.
Lovely Katie sent me her gorgeous wedding photos long time ago after the wedding. She opted for my 'Shabby Elegance' bouquet and smaller bouquets with the same design but have their handles wrapped in hot pink for her bridesmaids. I am so glad now I can offer this bouquet again in my Etsy shop.

Of course it'll not be exactly the same - all brooch bouquets are One of A Kind.

But finally I've found enough Sarah Coventry 'Sunflower' brooches and earrings ( which are the spirit of this bouquet!) and vintage amber rhinestone jewels for another similar bouquet.

I think this last for a life time bouquet will be cool for a Fall Wedding - what a real treasure which you can display in your house after the wedding and pass on to the next generation.

"BOLD RAINBOW 2" is finally here!

This is my first 'BOLD RAINBOW' bridal brooch bouquet which was sold sometimes in March. I just got feedback from the Canadien bride who bought it that she's very happy with it.

VERSAILLE in full white

Just made it for a lady who is getting married next month. I even prefer it to the original 'VERSAILLE' headdress I made. The original design was in cream, but my lady wanted it in full white, and she wanted that all the pearl embellishments was changed to crystals. So here it is. I needed to change the bleached peacock swords to trimmed ostrich plumes, too, as it's impossible to find full white peacock swords. I couldn't believe trimmed ostrich plumes can look that good!

I found gorgeous lace & sequin trim and a vintage japanese velvet leaf for it. A white open satin rose, three of my signature dupioni silk rolled rosettes, lots of tulle (I love tulle!) and here comes the beauty.

Sent the photos to Niki and she said she loves it. I am so excited to know what she thinks once she sees it in person.

CREAMY EDEN - personalised vintage brooch bouquet

Here is another new creation of mine : CREAMY EDEN - a personalised bridal bouquet made of vintage brooches and earrings and more...

This bouquet is made of a collection of vintage brooches and earrings in all shades of yummy cream, with a little bit of gold accent and well, may be a tiny bit of french vanilla or milky coffe :). There are some quite old pieces dated back to the 1940's which I love! It was actually really hard to part with my carved celluloid flowers - roses and some lacey ones but I thought they'd go really well in this bouquet, so may be this is a better place for them.

To match with the cream theme, I used many cultured pearls also in shades of cream in the bouquet which make it shinier, and creamy tulle here and there for a dreamy look.

The bouquet is surrounded by beautiful hand ruffled light cream jacquard ribbon and backed with plenty of matching light cream tulle for a 'petitskirt' effect.

The handle is wrapped with the same jacquard ribbon and at the end of it a beautiful shiny cream habutai silk bow is attached (this is however detachable if you choose not to have it).

The most interesting part of this bouquet is that it can be personalised. The other day I came across two very old vintage cameo settings which I couldn't just go pass. In fact this bouquet was firstly inspired by those oldies! I made two tiny paded cushion-likes to fit in these settings so later on I can offer my brides to hand-embroider their monogram and wedding date on them.

Look at the above picture! I try to photoshop it so you can get an idea how the bouquet would look in the end. Well, I will be embroidering it by hand and those cushions are small so I am afraid you you can't choose the font - it'll be my handwritting :) but I am sure it'll be beautiful - I have been hand embroidering sice I was 8. You can choose the colour for the monogram, though.

Hairbowswonderworld : A little bit of everything - PART I : BOUQUET

So, in the past years I'd been working hard to provide a wide range of products to my brides. I am pretty chuffed about what I've achieved so far I decided to blog about it :) This first part is all about bouquets, which I am able to offer my customers.

As the tittle said itself - a little bit of everything! Well, except fresh flowers :) but these look fresh just as real flower isn't it right?

These "bold & bright" flower brooch bouquet pictured below are what I've made for my vintage loving brides. All are sold including my bouquet serie "Garden of Happiness" but I am very glad to announce that Garden of Happiness 4 and Garden of Happiness 5 are going to be released soon! I used vintage brooches and earrings in these bouquets, but not just everything or any kind of brooches. I used mostly enamel flowers and rhinestone brooches with flower shapes with bright, cheerful colours and some quality glass lampwork flowers or czech glass flowers as fillers. Each bouquet has its own unique backing. If you like that type of bouquets pleasee feel free to visit my shop. Below are another type of brooch bouquets which are focussed more on a certain theme, or colour scheme.

Brooch Bouquets : Theme

These bouquets (in the next picture) are made with either seashells or sinamay, or both! I also used pearls, feathers, silk and lace for more variety and texture. If you have any other material that you want to use, simply let me know and I bet we can work things out together. You design and I'll make it! I will be more than happy, trying to bring your vision to life!

This Shabby Chic style is my best seller so far. Fabric flowers, cut, frayed and shaped by hands are arranged into bouquet together with either pearls, lace or feathers. So vintage, so whimsical!

I also carry a wild range of fabric flower bouquet in my shop. Either a type of life-like handmade fabric flower bouquet, or a more abstract style, such as bouquets made of my signature rolled rosettes, the possibilities of colours and types of flowers used are endless.

If you want something luxury, unique , light and floating, there are feather bouquets. You can have it custom made in many different colour schemes and different sizes and shapes.

Last but not least are my ribbon flower bouquets including some of my very unique designs such as Lotus, Orchid, Peony and Gardenia. These bouquets require very precise work and technique, a lot of time and patience. But in the end there will be something beautiful.

It's actually very hard to divide those bouquets into groups as I've done above. There are bouquets which have a little bit of everything and indeed a combination of two or more styles listed above. I am still exploring and hope I can introduce some new types this autumn.
